Exhibition “A Room of My Own” attacked on the eve of Ukraine's first gay parade event
On the 19th of May, 2012 at the Centre for Visual Cultural Research in Kiev, two unknown assailants defaced a photographic exhibition by award-winning photographer Yevgenia Belorusets. Using bent-over forks, the attackers damaged documentary photographs depicting the everyday lives of LGBT families in Ukraine.
The attack took place a day before the official closure of the exhibition, which had passed without incident since opening of the exhibition. Two men entered the gallery, waited until other visitors left, then ran along using forks to scratch the surface of the photographs, knocking some of them to the floor. A security guard working in the gallery was not able to detain the assailants. Police have opened an investigation into the attack. A video surveillance system recording of the attackers has been taken as evidence.
