Photo, text

First shown at the main festival exhibition of EMOP, in the context and as the part of Grey series 1, at the exhibition „What stands between us”, Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Februar - March 2025.

Kyiv, summer 2024. The textual foundation of this work is a dialogue I heard again and again throughout the war. In various forms, I reproduced this text myself, as if it were a limited set of signs – one that allowed me to describe the state of time I sought to capture in photography.

Photography here exists at the greatest possible distance from its object. It does not reveal it but conceals it – like a thought spoken within a close circle, unwilling and unable to break free into the dangerous external space. – Y.B.

Lubke-Tidow Maren, curator of the exhibition "What Stands Between Us":

Regarding one of these new images by Belorusets, a photograph of the Andriyivska Church in Kyiv, Katja Petrowskaja writes: ‘Something is bidding farewell in this image—perhaps the fragile stories of this city, which, in the deepest sense, have been destroyed by the war and will never be the same again. But perhaps these stories linger here, in this small corridor of light, as if someone had brushed aside fallen leaves with their hands.’ The images of Yevgenia Belorusets are vessels of memory—they still have much to tell."
